On August 21, vivo officially launched the vivo Vision, marking the first time a major Chinese smartphone maker has introduced a mixed reality (MR) headset to compete with Apple’s Vision Pro.
Back in March at the Boao Forum for Asia, vivo had already showcased the design of the Vision. Just before its launch, the company held a “vivo Salon” event where Hu Baishan, vivo’s Executive Vice President, COO, and President of the vivo Central Research Institute, discussed the motivations behind the project, pricing strategy, and future technology trends.
Hu revealed that many of the Vision’s key components already exist within the smartphone supply chain, eliminating the need to build a new one. He also noted that the headset’s price is expected to fall to around CNY 10,000 or even lower.
Regarding the Explorer Edition, Hu clarified it would not be sold to consumers. “If the hardware experience isn’t good enough at the start, it will leave a negative impression on the market and users. I’d rather move slower. Our first consumer-facing product must deliver at least an 80-point experience, and our goal is to achieve that within 2–3 years.”
